Veteran actor, Adebayo Faleti is dead



A renown Yoruba veteran actor, broadcaster, poet and writer, Chief Adebayo Faleti has passed away.

Adebayo, an old student of Ibadan Boys High School died Sunday morning at University College Hospital, Ibadan at about 6. am according to sources.

Chief Adebayo who happened to be one of the pioneer staff of the first television station in Africa, Western Nigeria Television (WNTV) died at the age of 86.

He was responsible for translating Nigeria’s National Anthem from English to Yoruba. He also translated speeches being made by military president of Nigeria Ibrahim Babangida and Chief Ernest Shonekan, Head of National Interim Government of Nigeria, from English to Yoruba.

Faleti has published a dictionary containing the formal or official use of Yoruba names.

He has received many awards, both locally and internationally, including the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) the Festival of Arts award with Eda Ko L’aropin and the Afro-Hollywood Award for Outstanding Performance in Arts

A family source who confirmed his death informed journalists that his body has been taken to anatomy section at the UCH.

Veteran news anchor, Jim Vance dies at 75 after long battle with cancer

Jim Vance, one of the first black major news anchors and Washington DC's longest serving local TV host has died at the age of 75 following a long battle with cancer. Station president and general manager, Jackie Bradford in a statement said, 'Jim Vance was not only the soul of NBC4 but of the entire Washington area. His smooth voice, brilliant mind and unforgettable laugh leaves each of us with a tremendous void'. Vance, who won more than a dozen Emmys, was one of the first African-American news anchors to host a show in a major news market in 1972. He became one of former president George H.W. Bush's fishing buddies and a confidante to the city's former mayor, Marion Barry, who died in 2014.

Man kidnaps himself and demands N60million from siblings

The Lagos state police command have arrested one Ufom Udoh for allegedly staging his kidnap in order to defraud his siblings of N60 million. According to the state police command's spokesperson, Olarinde Famous-Cole, Udoh had left his home on July 3rd and connived with his friend, Paul Okiemute, to defraud his brother, Victor Udoh and his other siblings of N60 million by way of staging his own kidnap. Victor had on July 3rd reported a case of a kidnapped person in Lagos state to the police. The case was then transferred to the state's anti-kidnapping unit, who during its investigation, traced all calls the complainant got on his phone. This led to the arrest of one Paul Okiemute. When arrested, Okiemute, confessed that Udoh staged his own kidnap to collect money from his elder brother due to his financial problems.  “Udoh was not kidnapped. It was all planned. TRAGEDY: 14 people burnt to death as tanker collides with commercial bus

Witnesses say the dead, who were consumed in the inferno, include women and children. The accident was said to have occurred at about 12 noon in front of a fuel station, few metres away from the popular Mayfair roundabout. An 18-seater commercial bus heading from Ondo State to Ibadan collided with a diesel-filled tanker that was negotiating a U-turn on the way, witnesses said. It was learnt that on collision, the bus burst into flames, burning most of the passengers beyond recognition. Witnesses told journalists that the extent of damage resulted from the delayed arrival of rescue teams to the accident spot. Nigeria to supply 130,000 tonnes of roasted cashew nuts to US

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Audu Ogbeh, has said Nigeria is set to supply 130,000 tonnes of roasted cashew nuts to the Walmart Super Market chain in the United States of America. He said the 130,000 cashew is valued at $7 billion. Chief Ogbeh said the US firm came to Nigeria to request for 130,000 tonnes of roasted cashew nuts and their demand is 130,000 tonnes of cashew nuts per annum, with a total value of $7 billion. “We are in conversations with Walmart, the biggest supermarket chain in the US. They came here and asked us to roast cashew nuts for them. “What Nigeria currently does is ship the nuts to Vietnam, which in turn roasts and sell to the US. An 18-day-old baby has died after she contracted a life-threatening herpes infection through a kiss. Baby Mariana was born healthy on July 1, however, on July 7, which was her parents' wedding day, she became ill and had to be rushed to the hospital where doctors tried unsuccessfully to save her life. Iowa couple, Shane and Nicole Sifrit had to cut their wedding reception short to take their 6-day-old daughter to the Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, USA. At the hospital, doctors said the child had become infected with meningitis HSV-1, which is caused by the herpes virus. Police speaks on Apapa mayhem, arrests cop who killed tanker driver

Lagos State Police Command has arrested the policeman, who allegedly shot a tanker driver dead along Burma Road, Apapa. The command said 18 suspected hoodlums who allegedly caused mayhem in the area following the killing have also been apprehended. Nigeria's 2017 budget, signed into law by the acting president a month ago, has still not been finalised and is being amended due to disagreements between parliament and the presidency, two sources familiar with the matter said. Any delays to government spending could hobble recovery in Africa's largest economy, now in its second year of recession. The 2017 budget, still not finalised in the second half of the year, was meant to spark that return to growth after the first downturn in a quarter of a century. The presidency and senior lawmakers had also promised that it would avoid the severe delays in passing the previous year's budget, which was signed off in May 2016 -- five months into the budget year. Acting President Yemi Osinbajo signed Nigeria's 2107 budget into law last month.
