Nigeria's former Attorney-General Onagoruwa dies



Olu Onagoruwa, former attorney-general, suffered a stroke after his son was brutally killed by the military

Nigeria’s former attorney-general, Dr Olu Onagoruwa is dead.

Onagoruwa, a known human rights activist, was said to have died in the early hours of Friday, July 21 at age 80.

The former Attorney-General of the Federation under the military government between 1993 and 1994 was said to have suffered a stroke following the brutal killing of his son by the military.

Respected across Africa, Onagoruwa was part of those who drafted the Ethiopian constitution in 1994.

The lawyer reportedly studied at the University of London for his LL.B; LL.M and PhD degrees. He returned to Nigeria to attend the Law School.

Before becoming the Attorney-General of the Federation, he set up the Onagoruwa Chambers through which he championed the rights of citizens becoming a Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 1993

While confirming the incident, Chidi Odinkalu, a former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, said: “Olu Onagoruwa, patriot, thinker, activist before it became fashionable to be one, good man, SAN. #RIP”

On his party, Gbénró Adégbolá tweeted: “Dr Onagoruwa sadly never really got over the killing of his son, allegedly by Abacha. Had stroke soon after. I o ray his soul finds rest.”

The incident came at a time Nigerians are still mourning the death of elderstatesman, Maitama Sule.

Former Head of State General Abdulsalam Abubakar on Sunday, July 9, described the death of late Maitama Sule as touching.

Abubakar, who said this in Kano when he paid a condolence visit to Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, stressed that the elder statesman’s death was a great loss to Kano and Nigeria as a whole.
