Unpaid Salaries: Benue State Civil Servant And Father Of 3 Resort To Hawking Groundnut To Survive



Mr Godwin Oga, a 46 year old staff of Benue State Environmental Sanitation Agency (BENSESA) has resorted to hawking groundnuts on the streets of Makurdi, the state capital.
Speaking to Benue News, the father of three said he started the business last month after he was unable to provide food for his family following governments inability to pay salaries for several months. 
“I have so far spent 15 years in service with BENSESA and have also been screened in the ongoing state government screening exercise.
“I started this groundnut business earlier in June this year to prevent hunger and starvation of my family and to buy medications” He explained. 
Mr Oga added that despite being a laughing stock, he preferred the business to stealing, urging other civil servants in the same situation as his, to also seek alternative means of survival. 
The state government owes upwards of five months unpaid salaries to state governments workers and eight months for local government workers and teachers; pensioners are also owed over a year’s wages.

New Studies Say Drinking More Coffee Leads To A Longer Life.

According to two newly published studies, greater consumption of coffee could lead to a longer life. One study surveyed more than 520,000 people in 10 European countries, making it the largest study to date on coffee and mortality, and found that drinking more coffee could significantly lower a person's risk of mortality. The second study focused on non-white populations. After surveying over 185,000 African-Americans, Native Americans, Hawaiians, Japanese-Americans, Latinos and whites, the researchers found that coffee increases longevity across various races. Veronica Wendy Setiawan, associate professor of preventative medicine at USC's Keck School of Medicine, who led the study on nonwhite populations said 'people who drank two to four cups a day had an 18% lower risk of death compared with people who did not drink coffee. The spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole has informed the general public to beware of fraudulent people who operate fake Facebook account in the name of the state commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni. He said the police boss is not a social media fanatic and he does not have anything to do with the fake accounts in his name on Facebook. Famous-Cole then warned those behind the criminal act to desist or face the full wrath of the law.
