Nigerians should expect new data price soon – NCC



The Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) has said Nigerians should expect a new data price as soon as an on-going cost-based research is concluded.

This was disclosed in Abuja by the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Umar Garba Dambatta during a chat with DAILY POST.

According to him, the commission had noticed that the level of data usage was growing across the country and there was need for an affordable and acceptable price floor for data.

He said this was necessary in order to forestall a price war in the data sub-segment of the telecommunications industry.

Dambatta disclosed that the commission was looking at other temporary measures in other to ensure that data services improved.

He said: “We have noticed that the level of data usage is growing. This attests to the earlier assertion by the NCC that data is going to be the next frontier.

“You recall that NCC attempted to do the interim price floor for data in order to ensure that we do not have a price war in the data sub-segment of the industry.

“This of course met with resistance from the consumers; and because the NCC is a listening agency, we suspended the interim price floor.

“As I am talking to you, there is a cost-based study going on in order to arrive at an accepted, affordable data price floor which will come into force as soon as the consultants’ work is concluded.

“That is, as soon as the outcome of this consultancy that is on-going over data price is discussed,.as usual, and is further consulted upon with other stakeholders who we expect will provide useful information towards arriving at an acceptable price floor for data.

“We are also looking at other temporary measures in other to ensure that data services improve.

“We are thinking about providing palliatives to smaller operators in the industry. I‎ mean those with about 7.5 percent share of the market.

“We are in discussion with them in order to see how we can help them to provide data services in different part of the country even as we are talking with bigger operators to ensure that we find a way to improve the quality of data services.”

Argentinian artist Marta Minujín, 74, has created a monumental replica of the Greek Parthenon from 100,000 copies of banned books. According to the artist, it symbolizes the resistance to political repression. The Parthenon of Books in Kassel, Germany is part of the Documenta 14 art festival. With the help of students from Kassel University, Minujín identified over 170 titles that were or are banned in different countries around the world, and constructed the full-size replica of the iconic temple from those books, plastic sheeting, and steel. Man Bags 16 Years Jail Term For Killing 21 Cats...

A Santa Clara County Superior Court judge has sentenced a 26-year-old California man to 16 years in prison for killing 21 cats, some of which he lured from people's homes. Robert Roy Farmer pleaded guilty last year to 21 felony counts of animal cruelty and one count each of misdemeanor battery and being under the influence. The cats began mysteriously disappearing from San Jose's Cambrian Park neighborhood in September 2015. Then cats began turning up dead, the Mercury News of San Jose reported Friday Farmer was found Oct. 8, 2015 in a Home Depot parking lot, sleeping in his car with a dead cat curled up in the center console. FG seeks more input into civil service reforms

The Federal Government is receiving more inputs from civil societies and other stakeholders to strengthen the National Strategy for Public Service Reforms (NSPSR). This was disclosed yesterday in Abuja by the Director-General of the Bureau for Public Service Reforms (BPSR) Dr Joe Abah at the Revalidation Session of the NSPSR. He said the reforms was first articulated and completed in 2009 as a coordinating mechanism for integrated reforms but articulated recent issues like the Treasury Single Account (TSA) and improvement in the budgeting system. According to him, although key aspects of the strategy have been implemented, it has never formally been approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC). The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HoCSF) Mrs Winifred Oyo-Ita who is the Vice Chairman of the Steering Committee on the reforms, said it was aimed at developing and deepening the capacity of government to consistently translate national strategic intents into action....
