WAEC Releases Results For 2017 May/June WASSCE



There was improvement in the performance of Nigerian candidates after the West African Examination Council (WAEC) on Monday released the results for the 2017 May/June West African Senior School Examinations (WASSCE).
A breakdown of the result as announced by the council’s Head of National Office, Monday, Mr Olu Adenipekun, showed that 923,486 candidates representing 59.22 per cent obtained a minimum of credits in five subjects and above including English Language and Mathematics.

He observed that 59.22%, percent performance of candidates that obtained five (5) credits and above including English Language and Mathematics in the WASSCE for School Candidates represents an improvement to the result in 2015 and 2016 which was 38.68% and 52.97%, respectively.

The percentage of candidates who attained this feat in 2014, 2015 and 2016 diets were 31.28 per cent, 38.68 per cent and 52.97 per cent respectively.
Meanwhile, it is understood that the result of 214,952 (Two Hundred and Fourteen Thousand, Nine Hundred and Fifty Two) candidates, representing 13.79% of the total candidature for the examination was being withheld for further investigation in connection with various cases of examination malpractice.
Speaking at a press briefing at the council’s office in Yaba in Lagos, Adenipekun said that out of the total number of candidates that sat the examination, 1,471,151 (One Million Four Hundred and Seventy One Thousand One Hundred and Fifty One) candidates, representing 94.36% have their results fully processed and released.
He, however, added that 95,734 (Ninety Five Thousand Seven Hundred and Thirty Four) candidates, representing 5.64% have a few of their subjects still being processed due to errors traceable to the candidates in the course of registration or writing the examination.

5% Salary Increase Not Possible - Ebonyi State Governor

Ebonyi State governor, David Umahi on Friday stated that he has no powers to increase salaries of local government workers. Threatening to sack any civil servant that indulges in politics ahead of the 2019 elections, he also said 13th-month salary will no longer be paid. Umahi spoke at a meeting with members of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Ebonyi state chapter and other affiliated unions at the Government House. Man kidnaps himself and demands N60million from siblings

The Lagos state police command have arrested one Ufom Udoh for allegedly staging his kidnap in order to defraud his siblings of N60 million. According to the state police command's spokesperson, Olarinde Famous-Cole, Udoh had left his home on July 3rd and connived with his friend, Paul Okiemute, to defraud his brother, Victor Udoh and his other siblings of N60 million by way of staging his own kidnap. Victor had on July 3rd reported a case of a kidnapped person in Lagos state to the police. The case was then transferred to the state's anti-kidnapping unit, who during its investigation, traced all calls the complainant got on his phone. This led to the arrest of one Paul Okiemute. When arrested, Okiemute, confessed that Udoh staged his own kidnap to collect money from his elder brother due to his financial problems.  “Udoh was not kidnapped. It was all planned. Eddie and his family died on Sunday at the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki Ebonyi State, following severe burns sustained from the incident.
