5% Salary Increase Not Possible - Ebonyi State Governor



Ebonyi State governor, David Umahi on Friday stated that he has no powers to increase salaries of local government workers.

Threatening to sack any civil servant that indulges in politics ahead of the 2019 elections, he also said 13th-month salary will no longer be paid.

Umahi spoke at a meeting with members of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Ebonyi state chapter and other affiliated unions at the Government House.

His words: “We are doing everything to protect the local government but unfortunately the present chairmen said they cannot afford to pay the 5 percent salary increase and I don’t have the powers to actually increase LG workers salaries.

“If the situation improves, I will increase the salary again. Workers should be happy that we are paying salaries on 15th of every month and it is never done anywhere in the country.

“No one else would do that for you. We can give bonus to everybody but since the workers are not appreciative of this fact, it seems we will stop the payment of the 13th month.

“Tell workers that what I promise to pay is promotion allowance and not leave allowance. No body discussed leave allowance with workers”.

Nigeria's 2017 budget, despite being signed into law, still being amended

Nigeria's 2017 budget, signed into law by the acting president a month ago, has still not been finalised and is being amended due to disagreements between parliament and the presidency, two sources familiar with the matter said. Any delays to government spending could hobble recovery in Africa's largest economy, now in its second year of recession. The 2017 budget, still not finalised in the second half of the year, was meant to spark that return to growth after the first downturn in a quarter of a century. The presidency and senior lawmakers had also promised that it would avoid the severe delays in passing the previous year's budget, which was signed off in May 2016 -- five months into the budget year. Acting President Yemi Osinbajo signed Nigeria's 2107 budget into law last month. Acting President Yemi Osinbajo today received the founder of the Malala Fund and girls’ education activist, Malala Yousafzai at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Malala, the Pakistani school girl who survived an attack by the Taliban, met with the Acting President at the State House in Abuja as part of activities to mark her visit to Nigeria which is the second in three years. Google Play Protect is now rolling out to all eligible Android devices, the Alphabet-owned Internet giant confirmed in a statement provided to Engadget. The latest anti-malware solution is being distributed to smartphones and tablets running Google Mobile Services (GMS) 11 and later versions of the API collection, the company said. The Mountain View, California-based firm is currently focused on rolling out the main Google Play Protect system service that’s integrated into the Settings app on your device, where you’ll find it located under the “Security” section of the “Google” menu. The solution itself is relatively automated in nature and will automatically scan all of the apps installed on your smartphone or tablet to make sure they are free of any malicious code.
