NANS pleads with ASUU, fed govt over impending nationwide strike

As it becomes clearer by the day that another nationwide strike by university lecturers seems inevitable, students under the umbrella body of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) are making frantic efforts to appeal to both the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to review their stands and avoid the standoff, which will definitely bode ill for the sector. Diamond Bank Shuts Apapa Branch After Mob Attack

The burnt Diamond Bank Plc Apapa branch Daniels Ekugo The Management of Diamond Bank Plc has shut its Creek Road, Apapa, Lagos branch following a mob attack on the branch on Wednesday. In a statement, Head, Corporate Communications, Chioma Afe confirmed that there was a fire incident as a result of the mob action. Afe stated that the bank was set ablaze by an angry mob after a policeman allegedly shot dead a trailer driver outside the bank premises. “We had a fire incident at our branch office on Creek Road, Apapa which severely damaged branch infrastructure as a result of mob action. While the situation is under control, we are working with the Nigeria Police Force and other law enforcement agencies to investigate actions leading to the fire incident. Minister of Information and Culture, Lia Mohammed, has shed more light on plans by the Federal government to stop entertainers and movie makers from shooting their jobs outside the shores of Nigeria. Last Saturday, Lai Mohammed disclosed this plan when he spoke at the  Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) House in Lagos. Nigerians criticise Senate for asking CBN to give dollars at N200 for pilgrimage

Hajj pilgrims The Nigerian Senate was heavily criticised by Nigerians on Thursday for asking the federal government to direct the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to supply dollars at N200 to those going on pilgrimage either to Saudi Arabia or Israel. If the government consents to the request, it means the allocation of foreign exchange for those planning to embark on the pilgrimage would be subsidised by about 37 per cent. Currently, the naira exchanges at about N315 to the dollar in the official window, as against about N365 to the dollar at the parallel market is. The request ignores the provisions in the approved Medium Term Expenditure Framework, MTEF, covering all expenditure plans for 2017, and the Appropriation Act, which was earlier approved by the lawmakers, prior to the assent by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo.
